La historia de Kalmah comienza en 1991 cuando Pekka Kokko (voz, guitarra) y Petri Sankala (batería) fundan Ancestor. Después de dos demos, Antti Kokko entra en la banda para tomar la guitarra solista. En 1998, después de 5 melodic thrash, death y death metal demos y 5 diferentes bajistas, era momento de reformar la banda y cambiaron el nombre por Kalmah, completando el equipo con Pasi Hiltula en los teclados.
Con nuevo entusiasmo, Kalmah comenzó a escribir las nuevas canciones para el CD promo Svieri Obraza. Con su rabiosa mezcla de melodic death, thrash y black metal, la banda firma contrato con Spinefarm Records, y llegan a los estudios Tico-Tico con Pekka Kokko (voz, guitarra), Antti Kokko (guitarra), Petri Sankala (batería), Pasi Hiltula (teclado) y Altti Veteläinen (bajo) para comenzar a grabar "Swamplord".
